Horse riding is a popular and traditional past time in the Scottish Borders and there are a number of riding yards in the area. The tradition stems from the Common Ridings, or Marches, like the Hawick Common-Riding, which celebrates the capture of an English Flag in 1514 by the youth of Hawick and the ancient custom of riding the marches or boundaries of the common land around the town.
